I talk about Soft Detour with Musee Magazine
I was flattered that they asked me such good questions, including “How did you develop this series?" “What challenges came up during this project?” and “What was your favorite thing about making this series?”

All of my series have developed through discovering a city or neighborhood I’m drawn to and feel I must explore in depth. This series is based at a park in San Marino, CA that I started going to every day for a semblance of peace in my life. It’s kind of a hidden park with a rose garden, a bright green lawn, eucalyptus, and palm trees that I wanted to spend time in. As I returned at different times of day over spring, summer, and fall with my camera and 50mm lens, I eventually created an immersive picture of the mutating natural landscape through the seasons.
What challenges came up during this project?
I didn’t set out to make it a series in the first place, so getting over the aimless feeling of literally walking around in circles was challenging. I would be at the park in the afternoon thinking I should be doing something else with my life, like working a full-time job in an office or something. Then the challenge was having the confidence to keep going, be consistent, develop the style, and lean fully into experimentation.
What was your favorite thing about making this series?
The images and way of working were unlike anything I’ve ever done. I surprised myself with what I made because I would take hundreds of images a day, rapid fire and only look back at them later. Shooting in raw made the color manipulation have endless possibilities which was thrilling.
